Completing a Health and Social Care Apprenticeship will provide you with a lifelong skill. This apprenticeship could lead onto working within NHS and private health care organisations caring for people with particular needs such as the disabled, elderly and people with learning difficulties.

What is a Health and Social Care Apprentice?

A Health and Social Care apprentice will deal directly with patients, supporting them with day to day tasks such as getting dressed, taking them shopping, serving food and changing bedding. You may also be required to provide support to doctors and nurses whilst caring for a patient.

What is the work like?

You will be assisting and helping people with particular needs such as the elderly, disabled and people with learning difficulties. This can take place either in a hospital, clinic, at home, out in the community or in residential and nursing homes.
Their duties may vary slightly from employer to employer and depending on the size of the company, but they commonly include:

• Shadowing a support worker
• Carrying out duties which encourage service users independence
• Protect the rights and promote the interests of service users and carers.
• Building and maintain the trust and confidence of service users
• Building relationship and maintain the trust and confidence of service users and carers.
• Ensuring service users are safe and free from danger or harm
• Provide support for Service users activities
• Respect the rights of service users while seeking to ensure that their behaviour does not harm themselves or other people.
• Be accountable for the quality of your work and take responsibility for maintaining and improving your knowledge and skills.

How will I learn on a Health and Social Care apprenticeship?

This course usually takes one year to gain an NVQ Level 2. To do this you won't need to go to a further education (FE) college or training centre. Your time will be spent in a place of employment where you will get to learn practical skills from seeing the real working environment. You will shadow qualified members of staff so that you are able to learn first-hand how to go about the job. You will also get the opportunity to assist in the activities. Once you pass your assessments and progress through your course you will be able to start completing tasks on your own. To ensure you are competent in completing tasks on your own a Remit assessor will visit you periodically at the work place to complete assessment testing with you

What skills are required for me to gain this apprenticeship?

As a health and social care apprentice you will need to demonstrate:
• A professional manner
• Good communication skills
• Understanding of patient and carer confidentiality
• Strong interest in a career within health and social care
• Ability to keep calm under pressure

Salary:

During your apprenticeship, the employer you are working for will pay you a salary. This will be a minimum of £2.68 an hour. Some employers pay more than this and some offer other benefits and incentives.
