HARDWARE ENGINEER - CONTRACT - NEWPORT

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Specifying, performing and documenting hardware designs for allocated elements of the product design architecture, by Specifying hardware architectures and solutions to problems statements.
- Performing in-house printed circuit board design for allocated area of responsibility
- Adequately documenting the design for allocated area of responsibility
- Controlling and reviewing work of the members of their team (where a team exists)
- The Senior Hardware Engineer Resolves clearly defined problem statements into design solutions typically up to 6 month in duration.
- Allocated Work Package elements are completed by the job holder to Clients Defence and Space standards, within agreed cost, time and quality constraints.
- Hardware design documentation is produced and co-ordinated for nominated product elements. These documents are agreed with, and supported by, project management, the technical team and the customer, as required. The customer is kept informed and kept on side regarding all project related design matters.
- Appropriate tools and techniques are used to design and integrate hardware elements to Clients Defence and Space standards and to customer specifications.
- Team members receive technical guidance in tools and techniques used for Clients Defence and Space development work. Hardware designs are performed to Clients Defence and Space standards. Records are maintained of all design decisions, and of all design solutions. (Records may be formal drawings and documents, or may be entries in engineering log books).
- Ensuring that the Clients, Defence and Space hardware design solutions comply with their requirements.
- Customer confidence in Clients Defence and Space solutions and design methods, by acting as the project's customer contact for all hardware design technical matters.
- Success of both internal and external design reviews and project reviews throughout the development life cycle.
- Continuous improvement of Hardware Engineering processes by identifying process problems, and suggesting process improvements to the Head of Common Hardware
- Successful coordination and communication is a critical part of this role. The job holder interfaces with customers, users, subcontractors, project management, engineering services and engineering development teams, as well as their own team. Occasionally one or more of these teams may be based outside the UK.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

ACADEMIC PLUS ANY ADDITIONAL EDUCATION:

- Degree Level (or equivalent) in an engineering/IT discipline.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE

- Must have experience of hardware schematic, PCB design & implementation for secure communications equipment or equivalent
- Must have excellent hardware PCB development process knowledge
- Must be familiar with high speed printed circuit board design standards and techniques
- Must be an experienced engineer, fully versed in design methodologies for their field able to work on their own, but providing regular reporting
- Must have recent experience of using one or more of the following tools:
- Orcad Capture
- Orcad PCB
- DesignSpark PCB

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

- Must have a good understanding of requirements capture, and of work package definition and estimation
- Must be highly self-motivated, articulate, with good verbal and written communications skills
- Must have good team working skills

DESIRABLE SKILLS

- Experience of product design for some or all of the following:
- Cryptographic Key Management and Distribution Systems
- Cryptographic Devices
- Secure Communications Systems
- Secure Communications Network Devices
- Design for CE approval of equipment
- Experience of hardware PCB development to meet UK approved cryptographic design criteria
