Completing a Food and Beverage Service Apprenticeship will provide you with lifelong skills. This apprenticeship could lead onto working in many different working environments such as restaurants, hotels, pubs, sporting venues and cafes, to name a few. This apprenticeship will provide you with the skills to be employable throughout your career.

What is a Food and Beverage Service Apprenticeship?

A food and beverage services apprenticeship can also be known as being a waitress or waiter. This job role can take place in a number of different working environments such as restaurants, hotels, pubs, sporting venues and cafes, to name a few. This is an important role as you will be looking after the customers during their visit and your interactions with them can determine whether they have a good or a bad experience. The role will require you to provide a high level of customer service and ensure that visitor's feel welcome and well looked after. You will also be required to take orders and have a good knowledge of the menu, dishes, drinks and company. You will be responsible for serving food and drinks to the customers and also tidying away once they have finished. As a waiter or waitress you will be part of a waiting team. You will also be part of a much bigger team as the work you do will have an impact on the chefs, front of house and bar staff. In just the same way, the work that others within the restaurant do will also have an impact on you, so team work is important here.

What is the work like?

Waiters and waitresses usually work shifts which will include evenings, weekends and sometimes public holidays. This role can be very busy and you will need to be able to keep calm under pressure, whilst still maintaining a high standard of customer service.

As a waiter or waitress your main duties would include:
• Greeting and seating customers
• Taking food and drink orders
• Serving food and hot and cold drinks
• Taking payments
• Working with other members of staff to ensure an efficient service
• Tidy and maintain tables

How will I learn on a business administration apprenticeship?

This course usually takes one year to gain an NVQ Level 2. To do this you won't need to go to a further education (FE) college or training centre as all the training is done in the work placement. Your time will be spent in a place of employment where you will get to learn practical skills from seeing the real working environment. You will shadow qualified members of staff so that you are able to learn firsthand how to go about the job. You will also get the opportunity to assist in the activities and tasks being undertaken. Once you pass your assessments and progress through your course you will be able to start completing tasks on your own. To ensure you are competent in completing tasks on your own a Remit assessor will visit you periodically at the work place to complete assessment testing with you.

What skills are required for me to gain this apprenticeship?

As part of the food and beverage services team you will need to demonstrate:
• High standard of personal appearance and hygiene
• Good communication skills
• The ability to work within a team or on your own
• The ability to keep calm in busy and pressured situations
• Good customer service skills
• Competent numeracy skills to assist with taking payments
• Health and safety awareness
• An interest in food, drink and providing a good service

Salary:

During your apprenticeship, the employer you are working for will pay you a salary. This will be a minimum of £2.73 an hour. Some employers pay more than this and some offer other benefits and incentives.
