THE ROLE

The role of the Disability Assessor in the Initial Review Team is a key delivery position reporting to the Team Manager. You will be responsible for the evaluation of each new referral to determine the appropriate assessment method and venue. In addition assessment reports are completed based on the available documentary evidence in some cases.

Important - To qualify for this role you must have 2 years post registration experience, however for exceptional candidates less experience will be considered. You must be registered with the NMC/HCPC/GMC with a valid licence to practice in the UK and no sanctions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

* As a Disability Assessor (Initial Review Team) you will undertake an assessment of an individual who is making a claim for the Personal Independence Payment. You will then carry out a comprehensive review and analysis to enable you to determine the next steps in the process.
* You will need to consider whether the claim should be managed as a Terminal Illness (TI)
* You will need to scrutinise the evidence and decide whether additional evidence is required and should be requested, whether advice needs to be given on the basis of a paper based review or whether a face to face consultation is required.
* Once you have gathered all the necessary information you will record all of your actions together with the clinical reasoning on the computer held cases record.
* You will provide a full justification explaining how you came to these conclusions from the evidence gathered.
* Applications from claimants with a terminal illness are fast tracked and completed within the Initial Review Team without face to face contact. Requiring sensitive handling, medical evidence is gathered to complete the appropriate report.
* A number of Disability assessors from Initial Review cover our Escalations function dealing with queries from staff at DWP.
* You may be asked to Mentor trainee disability assessors, be part of a Buddying Scheme for new starters, offer your area of clinical subject matter expertise in the form of "Champion Support" and undertake Audit reviews to support the development of the overall team and your personal development.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

Have sufficient clinical knowledge and skills to read and understand complex claimant information.

Be able to evaluate claimant information with an emphasis on health conditions or disabilities, their history and functional effects.

An ability to identify relevant information.

A capability of identifying and confirming evidence and reconcile possible conflicts of evidence.

An ability to consistently produce grammatically correct, comprehensive and well evidenced reports.

Competence in using computer and telephony equipment.

DESIRED SKILLS

The ability to communicate in a clear, friendly and concise manner using appropriate language and express facts and ideas in a clear and professional manner.

Gather evidence using open, closed, clarifying and extending questioning techniques

An ability to plan and manage activities Sets high standards and commits to clear objectives to achieve good quality, cost effective results within required time frames.
