The Director of the JHMI Professional and Career Development Office (PCDO) is responsible for the overall management of the Office as well as providing hands on training and counseling. The mission of the PCDO is to provide graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with the professional skills and knowledge to pursue and succeed in a scientific career. To achieve its mission, the Office offers professional development and career services to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (SOM), the Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH), and other entities. This year, there are approximately 800 graduate biomedical students in the SOM and 700 from the BSPH, and 1,200 postdoctoral fellows in the SOM and 150 in the BSPH. In the last year, a total of 1,400 individuals participated in a PCDO activity. The PCDO is comprised of the director, a fulltime assistant director/career counselor, and a fulltime administrative coordinator. There is potential for the office to expand, including the possibility of additional staff and/or assuming oversight of existing complementary functions, pending completion of a strategic planning process and identification of additional resources. The director reports to the Office of the Vice Dean for Education, and works closely with all stakeholders. A faculty appointment may be available commensurate with qualifications.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership and Management - Serve as Chair of the PCDO Advisory Committee, which represents the various stakeholders on issues such as courses and other services, communication and outreach, and connections among the stakeholders. Working closely with leadership, identify and prioritize stakeholder needs and develop options for meeting these needs. Manage and facilitate processes to promote coordination and collaboration with partners, including but not l limited to SOM Office of Faculty Development; SOM Institute for Excellence in Education; BSPH; School of Nursing; Welch Medical Library; Preparing Future Faculty Teaching Academy; Johns Hopkins Postdoctoral Association (JHPDA), graduate student associations, and others. Design and oversee systems to track participation in PCDO activities; respond to requests for information on programming and participation. With the SOM Office of Assessment and Evaluation, establish program evaluation strategy for PCDO programs. Develop and manage annual budget. Supervise PCDO staff.

Teaching/Coursework - Ensure that coursework is designed, offered to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and continually evaluated. Current coursework topics include but are not limited to: Leadership skills, Grant writing, Manuscript writing, Curriculum vitae and resume preparation, Oral presentations, Interview skills, Social media orientation and on-line profile development, Teaching skills. Expand topics to remain relevant to current issues for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, to include those commensurate with NIH and other national office recommendations (for example, training on the best use of Individual Development Plans). Work closely with JHPDA and graduate student groups and associations to communicate programming. Both teach and oversee teaching of all courses, workshops, seminars, etc.

Other Career Services - Provide individual career counseling and oversee staff's career counseling (career options, interviewing preparation, CV and resume review). Establish and oversee programming to provide exposure to diverse career opportunities. These might include but are not limited to "mini-internships" within JHU and teaching internships at surrounding universities or colleges. Collaborate with existing efforts, such as offerings from the Institute for Excellence in Education, the SOM Office of Faculty Development, and the Biomedical Career Initiative. Interface with the Johns Hopkins University career services offices and provide assistance with career fairs, career panel discussions. Serve as SOM representative on inter-divisional working groups and committees related to career services.

Other - Assist in development and writing institutional proposals for career and education grant opportunities. Provide requested documentation of coursework and programs offered by PCDO to be submitted with NIH training grants. Develop communication strategy for PCDO, to include website with information about coursework offered, potential funding sources, career opportunities, literature from national and international organizations, such as the National Postdoctoral Association, etc.
