Background
Capita are recruiting for a Scottish qualified interim/locum Criminal Lawyer on an 11 month contract to provide legal advice and support in the context of criminal work and changes to criminal law, guidance or operational policy intelligence gathering. Based in Scotland, initially in either Edinburgh or Paisley, there will also be some travel in Scotland and to London and Manchester and to Gartcosh (where a new office opens in 2014). You will have the benefit of being co-located with your clients - the Criminal Investigation in Scotland. This role can be undertaken on a full or part time basis.

Main Duties/Responsibilities
Dealing with primary legislation, by liaising closely with policy teams to ensure that policy proposals are sound in terms of HRA and EU law Drafting secondary legislation, to produce clear legislation that is intra vires, EU and HRA compatible and which delivers, as far as legally possible, the policy objectives Providing support and legal advice to operational case teams and policy directorates on the use of the client's powers in criminal investigations in Scotland. Developing and maintaining a close relationship with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service. (COPFS) Providing legal advice on changes to criminal law, guidance or operational policy in particular progressing any legislative changes

Outputs/Deliverables to be achieved
Providing clear and timely advice and/or litigation services to departmental clients, and policy partners. Dealing with primary legislation, by liaising closely with policy teams to ensure that policy proposals are sound in terms of HRA and EU law; that clear and comprehensive instructions to Parliamentary Counsel are given, including any advice required on issues of general law. Drafting secondary legislation, to produce clear legislation that is intra vires, EU and HRA compatible and which delivers, as far as legally possible, the policy objectives

Skills/Experience Required
Skilled Criminal Lawyer with PQE in Scottish Law You will be well orgainsed, self motivated and able to demonstrate a high degree of initiative Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential

Formal Qualifications Required
Lawyer qualified to practice in Scotland
