ABOUT MINISTRY OF CULTURE, YOUTH AND SPORT
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport in Guyana has the responsibility to formulate a comprehensive framework for positive youth development in partnership with local, regional and international stakeholders.
In 2014 Guyana developed a draft National Youth Policy that represents a mainstreamed and integrated policy response to youth transition phases and recommends a coordinated and networked approach to matters related to adolescent and youth in Guyana. Implementing the Youth Policy requires the development of a harmonized National Youth Policy Action Plan that facilitates cross-sector investment and institutional support for youth development in Guyana.
THE VOLUNTEER'S ROLE
The overall objective is to build the capacity of the NOC in order to provide effective psychosocial support ot vulnerable youth.
Specific Objective:
Develop a training manual for students at the NOC that should include psychotherapy, life skills, empowerment, etc and train staff on using and implementing the manual.
Activities:
In consultation with the Assistant Director of the Youth Entrepreneurial and Skills Training Program, social workers and other staff of the NOC and students:
1) Conduct an assessment of the needs of students
2) Design participatory youth friendly strategies to address the same
3) Design a manual with training modules on the same
4) Conduct training sessions with social workers and other staff at NOC in implementing the manual
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
ESSENTIAL ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Advanced degree (Masters or equivalent) in Child Psychology, social work or equivalent field.
ESSENTIAL PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND/COMPETENCIES:
Minimum of 4 years experience designing and conducting programmes for children within the area.
Experience working with youths in a correctional facility.
Experience conducting training programs.
Experience in working both with civil society and governmental organizations.
Work experience in multi-cultural environment.
Self-started, and ability to work with minimum supervision.
Experience in working with children in detention will be a asset.
TRAINING AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Our training and support package covers the costs of being an overseas volunteer, allowing you to enjoy a modest but healthy lifestyle while you volunteer abroad. This includes:
Attendance at a Cuso International assessment day (candidates must cover the first $150 of the most. cost-effective travel expenses and accommodation costs)
Travel and accommodation costs associated with pre-departure training
Return airfare and visa/permit (this includes a return flight in the case of a family emergency)
Coverage for required vaccinations, medications and comprehensive health insurance
Accommodation while overseas
A modest living allowance, which varies depending on the country where you are placed
Quarterly payments to support you in your placement
Modest support for accompanying partners
For placements requiring Spanish language, substantive in-country language training is provided for those who already have intermediate knowledge
