Control & Protection Systems - Contract - Gloucester - Nuclear

The contractor will support the Control & Protection Systems (CAPS) Team, reporting to the Head of Control

*Take on the Design Authority role - taking accountability for the Safety Case and the engineering that underpins it.
*Establish the specification and design with the partners as the plant vendor and contractor.
*Provide technical support to other parts of the organisation, such as the Permissioning and the Site Development teams.

The contractor will support two principle areas of work;

1)To initiate consideration of, develop, document and promote the CAPS Team, Site Systems Group scope and technical agenda - ahead of a Site Systems Group recruit in FQ2, 2014-15.

2)To prepare and author the CAPS Team contribution to the Basis of Design document

The contractor will take the lead role in developing the CAPS Team contribution to the Basis of Design document, for the areas of both the Plant & Process Group and the Site Systems Group. Hence the contractor would be expected to have a wide knowledge of and relevant experience in all nuclear power plant control and protection systems.

The contractor will be expected to liaise effectively with the numerous stakeholders that are involved in a nuclear new build project. This might include attending meetings with regulators, vendors, contractors and other interested parties.

Principal Accountabilities

*Deliver the two principle areas of work described above.
*Contribute to the overall site systems strategy, policy, planning and delivery, especially within the areas of individual contribution and responsibility.
*Work with the Engineering CAPS team staff, the rest of the Engineering Directorate and other Horizon staff to deliver work in an efficient, timely and coordinated fashion.
*Where he/she is delegated individual responsibility to contribute as requested in determining the objectives, setting the strategy, carrying out the planning, organising the resources, driving the delivery and influencing the outcomes.
*Provide advice on and management of site systems issues, seeking the support of relevant experts and specialists as required.
*Within the areas of contribution to identify and highlight issues that are either an opportunity for or a risk to the client or to the project - and to develop the appropriate response strategies and plans.
*Within the areas of contribution contribute to C&I specific, site systems specific and overall quality assurance.
*Within the areas of contribution contribute to C&I specific, site systems specific and overall project management.

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of nuclear power plant technology is required.
Knowledge of and relevant experience in all nuclear power plant control and protection systems is required.
Working knowledge and experience of a number of the relevant site systems is required.
A capability to apply engineering and technical principles, knowledge and experience to a wide range of C&I systems and site systems, including systems new to the contractor, is required.
Previous experience in the design, implementation and/or maintenance of power plant or other relevant plant site systems is required.
Previous experience in understanding, interpreting and working to the requirements or expectations of regulators is required. Previous experience in working with regulators to establish, interpret, challenge or make proposals related to requirements or expectations is preferred. A working knowledge of the UK approach to regulating safety is strongly preferred.
A good knowledge of international Standards and definitions of good practice is required. Experience in interpreting Standards or definitions of good practice is required.
A good knowledge of the leading power plant site system vendors and their current principal offerings is preferred.
Experience and demonstration of being able to develop strategy and to plan approaches is required. Initiative and drive is required. Being able to work effectively as a team member, being supportive of other team members and promoting positive and effective working relationships within the team is required. Being able to work with others more junior and others more senior is required.
Demonstration of being able to liaise and manage relationships across Horizon, with vendors and contractors, external suppliers, specialist consultants, industry groups, government organisations and professional institutions is required.

Security clearance at BPSS level (or higher) is required. A need for security clearance at SC level might arise during the works, in which case additional checks would be made.
