The client's application landscape is scattered. Each location has its own set of applications to support business, but it is hard to get reliable information that exceeds local application data. Information Management will be asked to deliver the local business processes - including the applications in use - in order to determine the source of the data and the information requested.

The Business Intelligence assignment is about defining the Information Architecture and rationalizing the diverse information requested by the Information Managers. He/she will form a team, depending on the tools to be used for gathering, analysing and distributing the management information. The development of a Dashboard is part of his/her scope.

Plan of approach:
- Application and database environment: define what applications are in scope to deliver data that will be transferred to information;
- Current reports/queries: investigate what reports will be kept and what reports will be modified or replaced;
- Information needs of users/user groups: determine per role the information that needs to be distributed, including the frequency;
- Report and analyses environment: determine the format of the reports/report models to be delivered, including parameters to be filled out by the user to generate his/her own customized views;
- User interface: determine what demands users have to present the data, on paper, screen, mobile, tablet, dashboards
- Priorities: build the data warehouse and release the dashboard step by step, focussing on the biggest report needs and quick wins.

Successful when after:

- Two months

. all applications to be in scope are defined
. a detailed plan is available for the follow up

- Three months

. The top 10 easy to realize reports are defined and implemented
. first reports are ranked by the concerning user groups for their added value

- Six months

. all additional report needs are defined
. additional reports are scheduled to be developed
. future FAM OBI started, is familiar with the approach and is becoming independent of the information architect
. information on what applications offer similar functionality is available

- Nine months

. FAM OBI is in the lead
. Information architect gives support for one or two days a week
. business itself asks for more reports
. rationalisation of applications is initiated

- Twelve months

. second FAM OBI started in the team
. business ranks support of the BI team with 7 or higher
