Bioinformatics Interaction Designer

Primary responsibilities

Work with marketing and product teams to create design prototypes, including graphic design, user interactions, site navigation, and layout of content, for Life Technologies and Life Technologies partner web environments

Brainstorm creative user interface concepts with the product team and develop original design concepts

Create visual concepts-both in online and print media-that match corporate branding requirements and any customization for clients or partners

Develop design specs and comps for production in online media

Create design files that reflect both user interaction design and graphic design for implementation

Work closely with Engineering team to create design concepts and files that can be easily implemented and workacross a variety of platforms, devices, and browsers

Requirements

Portfolio of work demonstrating excellent user interaction, conceptual, and graphic design for online media

Bachelor's degree in interaction design, graphic design, visual arts, communications or other discipline related to the job's primary responsibilities

Demonstrated attention to detail in visual arrangement, color, typography and flow

Demonstrated success in using interactions and graphic design to communicate complex concepts simply and clearly, particularly in the fields of health and science

Demonstrated mastery of Photoshop (and CS3 suite) to create pixel-perfect mockups

Solid understanding of design pitfalls, especially with regard to Web standards and browser compatibility issues

Previous experience and success designing for complex, dynamic web applications

Great attitude and strong work ethic

Two to four years of experience in web and/or print design; graduate work in design an asset as well as prior work experience or academic training in the life sciences.

Experience working in a product development environment, particularly in a dynamic start up environment, highly desirable.

Advanced knowledge of XHTML, CSS, and of digital imaging and illustration with Adobe Photoshop (and CS3 suite), QuarkXPress, Illustrator and InDesign with formal training an asset

Working knowledge of JavaScript, PHP and dynamic HTML; experience with Macromedia Flash

Knowledge and demonstrated experience with cross-browser and cross-platform issues (IE, Firefox, Safari, etc.)

Extensive experience working on a Mac platform

Excellent communication and writing skills

Attention to detail, customer-service orientation, and creativity in problem-solving

Ability to work in a team and to communicate in a clear way to provide training to co-workers and internal clients as needed

Ability to work at the speed of a startup, but with attention to detail producing results within defined scope on time

Superior knowledge of current web-design trends and techniques, a strong online portfolio displaying user-centric design, and experience with web database solutions are definite assets.

Experience in start-up environment or healthcare / biotech is a plus.
