Application Engineer

The application engineering team is responsible for the installation, configuration, fine-tuning, maintenance and management of most of the server based applications and Middleware used within the organization. In order strengthen the team, our client is looking for an application engineer which will have a strong focus on automatic deployments and remote configuration management.

Tasks and duties

Accountability 1: installation & configuration

. Install & configure the Middleware and applications both for commercial of the shelf (COTS) and internal applications
. Automate the software installation process and update process guided by the guidelines from development
. Create and review the software installations procedure and/or scripts
. Create and review operational documentation for existing and novel services
. Give feedback for improvements of the installation and configuration process

Accountability 2: Daily operations

. All tasks that make the daily operations of the applications team
. Define, Script and Execute application & Middleware setup
. Execute DRP exercises
. IT-OPS Back Office applications functions require participation in 24/7 duty schedule to guarantee Service availability

Accountability 3: Incident, Problem, Change & Configuration management

. Incorporate the ITIL process
. Solve complex incidents and perform post-mortem analysis
. Work to solve problems
. Assist the change process

Communication skills:

INTERNAL

1 Daily contact with peers in the operations department, software developers, software testers, software integrators, project managers, and management
2 Represent IT Operations in a formal way on all kind of meetings in the organization

EXTERNAL

1 Be in contact with suppliers and/or sales for existing and/or new products
2 Contact support departments of software vendors in case of incidents, problems or test cases at a technical level.
3 Contact suppliers for technical trainings
4 Contact organizers of seminars or forums when needed
5 Contact technical departments or project management of subcontractors
6 Assist the management with recruitment for new technical people in the department

4. Knowledge & Experience

Education: Bachelor Degree preferably in Information Technology or equivalent by relevant experience.

Knowledge:

. Frequent use and general knowledge of industry practices, techniques and standards.
. General application of concepts and principles.

Technical knowledge:

. Some years of experience with Java application Servers on Linux (WebSphere, Jboss, OSGI runtime)
. Some years of experience with web Servers (Apache, nginx)
. Good knowledge of network functionality and concepts
. Good knowledge of Linux Administration
. Basic knowledge of security principles
. Interest in new innovative technology like OSGI, micro-services and container technology
. Good knowledge of configuration management tools (ansible, puppet)
. Basic knowledge of Windows server technology

Experience: 3-6 years relevant experience

Languages:

. One of the two national languages (FR/NL)
. Fluent in English
