We currently require Health Advisors to work at Cornwall Out of Hours. The job involves working weekends - working hours will vary between the times of 0800 - 0000

Cornwall Out of Hours has provided the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Primary Care Trust with out of hours (urgent care) GP services since April 2006 covering over half a million people and more during the holiday seasons. The Out of Hours service is run by a highly skilled and experienced clinical team.

By nature of the service provided, Cornwall Out of Hours operates on an out of hours basis when all surgeries and other urgent care providers are closed. These hours are;

Monday to Friday - 1800hrs to 0830hrs

24 hours a day at weekends (Friday 1830 - Mon 0830) and on public/bank holidays.

Job summary:

To receive calls for urgent care assessment from members of the public and other agencies, record accurate details, conduct NHS Pathways telephone assessments and pass all relevant information to clinicians for further action.

Health Advisor main duties:

- To answer incoming calls in a timely and efficient manner, within the time standards as defined in National Quality Requirements for Out of Hours Services
- To always respond to callers in a respectful caring and sensitive manner whilst maintaining the utmost standards of patient confidentiality and safety
- To record accurate and appropriate patient details onto NHS Pathways and associated systems before passing these details onto the relevant clinicians and outside agencies
- To be aware of recourses available to each individual patient and offer these appropriately
- To be familiar with Cornwall Out of Hours service protocols and guidelines when dealing with particular situations
- To maintain currency with all mandatory training, and attend staff meetings as and when required by management
- To be as flexible as possible in covering last minute sickness and during high peak high demand periods where extra staff are required (as much advanced warning will be afforded)
- To maintain professional standards with regard to all contact with clinicians, managers, co-workers and outside agencies, to ensure a professional image is upheld by Cornwall Out of Hours service
- To deal with any potential or actual safety hazards or, for the avoidance of doubt, refer immediately to a management
- To mutually maintain the supportive team working environment

Essential Skills:

All successful candidates will be required to undertake training in the use of the NHS Pathways in addition to other mandatory training requirements (most of which will be completed prior to NHS Pathways training)

The NHS Pathways training will consist of;

- Completion of the Distance Learning Pack
- A further 10 days of classroom based training at Cudmore House, Truro (approx 60hrs)
- 3 assessments which will be undertaken under exam conditions.

Successful candidates will be required to complete bi-annual Pathways update courses, as well as keeping up to date on training such as Manual handling, fire safety, Safeguarding Adults & Children.
